The Bold 9650 was not the only device RIM announced at WES.. They've also announced their update to the Blackberry Pearl (finally), the Pearl 3G. The original Pearl was the first Blackberry to sport the trackball which was eventually adopted by the Curve, Bold, and the rest of the RIM line. It was also the device with the most staying power out of RIM's lineup, though it was largely unchanged for that time.
The Pearl 3G (9100) ditches the iconic trackball in favor of the optical track bad the rest of its brothers and sisters have adopted. It also gets a ton of upgrades from the old 8100 model. The Pearl 3G is the first RIM device to sport 892.11n (and b/g) WiFi, and it's also got a few nice spec bumps like 256MB internal storage and microSD up to 32GB. What's interesting is the dual key configurations RIM is offering. One is the traditional 20-key two letter per key Pearl keypad, and the other is a more old school 12-key three letter per key cell phone keypad. I'm not sure why they decided to offer the two configurations, but reports are saying the 12 key is actually more comfortable on the fingers. Both are using a predictive text implementation that RIM points out is not T9, but their own SurePress technology.
No word just yet on service providers, availability, or pricing just yet, but I've got my money on AT&T/T-Mobile, soon, and reasonably inexpensive. Check the press release down below for all the gory details.
