When Google announced the Nexus One, few folks weren't wondering when it might be coming to other carriers, specifically Verizon. Google announced shortly afterward that they would indeed be supporting US AT&T 3G bands in addition to T-Mobile 3G support. But, all those folks waiting for the Verizon version of the Nexus One are still left high and dry. Until now, that is.
This week, in a surprising move, Google replaced the Verizon Nexus One offering in favor of the Droid Incredible from Verizon. The Droid Incredible is essentially the same as the Nexus One internally, but it does have significant differences. It runs the very same Snapdragon processor clocked at the same speed, but it has a much more responsive screen, different case, and perhaps most importantly, it runs HTC's Sense UI which turns Android 2.1 from what looks like an unfinished OS into a beautiful powerful mobile platform.
The curious thing here is that Google has pioneered this new model of selling mobile devices through the manufacturer and not the service provider. And now, instead of partnering with HTC to offer the Incredible, or another comparable model to customers through the same means as the Nexus One, Google is directing new customers to Verizon to purchase a Droid Incredible. Apparently the notion of buying a phone based on it's merits and not the price of the service or whether or not they even offer the device was not really a priority for Google.
What do you think? Were you look forward to Google changing the cell phone landscape? Let us know in the comments!
