Google is planning to bring 1Gbps (20x faster than the US average) to 50,000 homes across trial locations in the US. Google said it might even expand to 500,000 homes if it goes well. This is an experiment to try to get "competitively priced" fast broadband into more homes in the US. It's only an experiment but if it gets some adoption, and the American Population expresses interest, it may finally blast doors open to get the US up to speed (literally) with the rest of the world in relation to broadband.
