Google I/O: Here's What Went Down

Google I/O was last week and with it came a ton of great great news. Everything from Google's entry in to the living room, to codes, launches, Android, and more. There's so much, in fact, that I'm lumping it all into this one post. Details on Google TV, Froyo, Places API, WebM, and more are all after the jump.

Google No Longer Selling Nexus One Online

What you need to know:
• When the Nexus One launched, they were poised to revolutionize the mobile industry by offering the device independent from carriers, shifting the attention to which device you wanted, not which carrier had the device you wanted.
• This would then drive carriers to step up their game, because customers could get the device they wanted, and pick the carrier that was best.
• Unfortunately, Google consistently delivered poor numbers on the Nexus One.
• Now, Google is pulling the online Nexus One store, and sending customers to carriers to sign up for service just as we're all used to.

I'm pretty upset this didn't take. It had a lot of potential, and I feel like it's one of those things that just needed more time. The phone didn't even launch with all the carriers available. By the time they did, they replaced the Nexus One with the Droid Incredible on Verizon, and the EVO 4G on Sprint. Eventually, if they had launched with every carrier available, carriers would have realized that they had to step it up in order not to lose business, but unfortunately, that just wasn't the case. Hopefully we'll see some kind of resurgence soon, otherwise we're all stuck in the carrier's stranglehold for the foreseeable future.

Google Working With Verizon On Chrome OS Tablet

According to the Wall Street Journal, Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam has confirmed that they are, indeed working with Google on a tablet device set to compete directly with the Apple iPad. This, on top of the 5 year exclusivity deal with AT&T may finally lay rest to the rumors that the iPhone will be coming to The Big Red any time before 2012. This is yet another nail in the coffin of Google and Apple's relationship.

We don't know much about the Google tablet just yet, but we do know now that it'll be paired with Verizon's excellent network. And, based on Bloomberg's report, it will be running Android, not Google's Chrome OS (concept video above).

Android Market Share Zooms Past iPhone In Q1 For First Time Ever

Well well well, what have we here. Based on a study published earlier this week, the Android OS has surpassed the iPhone in terms of market share for the first (and probably not last) time. Android has risen from a 20% market share, which really isn't a number to shake a stick at, all the way up to 28% in Q1 of this year. The iPhone, on the other hand, remained at the same 21%, and RIM (Blackberry) is holding strong at 36%.

Google Gets A Long-Awaited Makeover

Google Search is easily their biggest product, yet it's the one that goes without as many updates. Well, this week Google has modified the look of its results page. Now, in addition to the bar on top that segments the different search categories, there is a left side navigation column with rich icons for each category. The column also includes a ton of new features that were previously not on the results page like Universal Search which provides contextual results, and "Something Different" which is built on Google Squared, a product that allows you to find and compare entities. Google's blog post says it best, so I'll let them elaborate. Check out the excerpt from the blog post announcing it and a video after the jump.
