Google Picks Up BumpTop; 3D Chrome OS On The Way?

Bumptop is an interestingly cool desktop replacement for Mac and PC. Or at least, it was. Now, Google owns them and they've just shut down their operation. Bumptop had a free version and a Pro version. I played with the free version of on the Mac a few months ago when it was put out. Despite how cool it was and how clever the organizational cues were, I reverted back to OSX. It was just missing some features that I needed. Now that they've been picked up by Google, they've discontinued the product. What Google is planning to do with them, they haven't said, but it's certainly a curious choice. Maybe something Chrome OS related? Who knows. Bumptop had a lot of exposure, and had a lot of promise, so here's hoping Google puts them to good use. This has been a huge year for acquisitions already, and it's only just turned to May. Maybe the economy is spiking a little bit, hm?

Okay, so we covered Multitasking at length, App Folders, Enhanced Mail, GameCenter and iAd. Well, there were two more tentpoles that weren't really that big, so I thought I'd include them in there with all the "rest of the stuff" in OS 4.0.

• iBooks
They're exactly the same as they are on the iPad, but on a much smaller screen. Why anyone would want to read on their iPhone is beyond me, but hey, it's available.

• Enterprise Support
4.0 supports multiple exchange accounts, remote wipes, remote management, and wireless app distribution, and a ton of other features for enterprise customers.

iPhone OS 4.0 - iAd

via GizmodoA few months ago, Apple attempted to buy AdMob, a mobile ad platform, but they were outbid by none other than the big G. You might say this was the the first shot fired in the friendship-turned-rivalry between Apple and Google. Not too long after, Apple picked up Quattro Wireless. Since then, we've been wondering what Apple might be doing with them. In the days leading up to last week's iPhone OS 4.0 event, some information leaked that we might be seeing Apple's new iAd platform for iPhone at the event. We did.

iPhone OS 4.0 - GameCenter

via GizmodoiPhone OS 4.0 brings with it a ton of new features, many of which were desired, if not expected. But, GameCenter seemed to come out of left field. For years now, folks have been speculating about Apple's entry into the gaming world, but we didn't realize when it slipped under our noses under the guise of the iPhone, iPod touch, and now iPad. There's no doubt about it, Apple is positioning themselves as a viable gaming platform. This is even more clear now with the debut of Apple's GameCenter, which promises to be a GameChanger.

iPhone OS 4.0 – Enhanced Mail

Along with various other improvements to the iPhone OS, version 4.0 promises enhanced mail capabilities.  Email is an important tool and short of the phone, most of us use it as our main business communication method.  Steve Jobs calmly nods his head in agreement.  Thankfully he still thinks email is cool.  Because of this, Apple developers will be implementing some much needed features.
